A Leading Life

Seth Godin has it right in his book, Tribes.  The essence of his message is we all have a responsibility to lead in some way.  There’s the old cliche, “Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way!”  In Godin’s opinion, none of us should perceive ourselves as always following and certainly not needing to get out of the way.  Rather, pick up your share of the leadership load and the world in total will be a better place.

I couldn’t agree more.  The fact is every one of us has aspects of our lives that requires us to lead the way.  It could be as it relates to our family, career, social interaction, health, financial management and a myriad of other things.  We, individually, own the decision making process and the related action steps that need to be taken.  If anyone of us doesn’t follow-through on these “micro-leading” responsibilities, the entire system is weakened in some way.  In short, the whole is only as good as the sum of it parts.

So what is a person to do in assuming their leadership responsibilities, however they may be defined?  I suggest you answer the following questions to come up with the answer.

  • What is it about your life that inspires you to do whatever it takes to lead yourself and others to success?
  • Are you positive and bursting with hope about the direction of your life and do other people feel it?
  • How strongly are you connected to your thoughts and feelings and those of the people around you?
  • Are you compassionate toward yourself and others?
  • Are you continously aware of your impact on yourself and others?

Your answers to the above questions will put definition to how well you are doing in assuming your leadership responsibilities.  If you like what you see, then congratulations.  In contrast, if your answers are not satisfying in some way then define what you need to do to fix it and do it!

In summary, it is not in a vacuum that you “lead” your life.  You have a “lead” role in your life and in the lives of all those with whom you come in contact.  Don’t get out of the way.  Don’t follow.  Lead!
