Back to Lead

b2ap3_thumbnail_j0443596_20130106-201042_1A lot has been written and said about leading and leadership throughout millennia.  The idea of what it takes to be a great leader, in other words, isn’t just a modern question.  You can find it in the discussions of ancient philosophers all over the world.

I think it’s a great discussion because our leaders in every walk of life are so important to us and our results.  A great person working under poor leadership will get mediocre to, maybe, good results.   A mediocre and, or, a good person will get extraordinary results when being led by a great leader.

So, what’s it take to lead with greatness?  Well, only great leaders are comfortable with their back.  To clarify…great leaders know that the people behind them are so inspired that they have the leader’s back.  Those people will follow the leader to wherever he suggests and they will do it without question and with absolute dedication and gusto.

Great leaders have a confidence, above all else, that inspires a confidence in those they lead.  They don’t turn their back on those they lead to be exclusionary.  They turn their back to point the direction forward.  A great leader can’t face the people whom s/he is leading and be able to see the horizons of opportunity that lay ahead.
