Contrary Edge

Okay, now, let’s think about this a little bit.

The word, contrary, sounds a little edgy.  It just comes across with somewhat of a negative feel.  It shouldn’t necessarily have a negative edge to it but for most people that is the case.  It’s probably because of the very definition of the word.  To put that in perspective here’s a couple:  “Opposed, as in character or purpose; Completely different; Opposite in direction or position; Adverse; Unfavorable…”  Enough said?  Generally, the word throws-off negative vibes.

Now, let’s consider the word, edge.  There’s lots of definitions but a couple are:  “The usually thin, sharpened side of the blade of a cutting instrument; Keenness, as of desire or enjoyment; zest; A dividing line or point of transition…”

So, what’s the point?  Well, let’s integrate the messages in those definitions into what it takes to become all you can be in this life.

Contrary to popular belief, nice guys don’t finish last!  The people that finish last in life are those who don’t want to get out of their comfort zones.  They are not “completely different” than the mediocre masses.  Instead of going in an “opposite direction or position” from mediocrity, they embrace it!  They see it as “unfavorable” to want to work hard and differentiate themselves from the crowd.

In other words, they don’t create an edge for themselves.  They are not filled with “keenness, as of desire or enjoyment.”  “Zest” to them is a bar of soap not a state of mind!  But, the “dividing line or point of transition” from mediocrity to greatness is exactly that…zest.

Your state of mind in life should be to always look at things from all sides not just one.  Be a little “contrary!”  That will give you an “edge” in your transition to greatness.
