Excuse Me

The title is a common phrase, wouldn’t you agree?  You’ve probably used it thousands of times over your life, so far.  It seems innocuous enough and even courteous.  I mean…so, excuse me…what’s the problem?

There isn’t a problem, I guess, if we were talking about the phrase in the common application of it.  But, let me ask you:  Are you serious about maximizing your success in life?  If so, then, there’s a problem with the phrase, excuse me.

Let’s explore why.  In the usual sense of what it takes to maximize your success, there are a few common steps:

  1. Clearly define your goals and why they are emotionally extremely important to you.
  2. Build a plan of action that clearly defines your path to achieving those goals.
  3. Act on your plan consistently and enthusiastically.
  4. Adjust your plan as circumstances change along the path to your goals.
  5. Upon achieving your goals…celebrate!
  6. Evaluate what you did well and what you would change in achieving your goals.
  7. Establish new goals and start the process all over again.

Next question:  Do you see anything stated or implied in those steps that references the phrase, excuse me?  To heck with it!  I’ll answer the question for you.  The answer is a resounding NO!

If you want to maximize your success in life, you can’t take an attitude that is one of “excuse me.”

b2ap3_thumbnail_j0341369Yes, you must be respectful of other people’s circumstances and needs, always.  But, that doesn’t mean you have to say, Excuse me., as you pass them by on your journey to success.

In short, you can’t excuse your way to success.
