Great Is Little

You’ve seen them, met them or read about them.  Them being those people in this world who exude greatness.  They are bigger than life itself it seems to you and the rest of us.  Fact is being great isn’t about bigger than life or anything else for that matter.

It doesn’t make any difference what walk of life you are talking about.  Those who are great, in whatever of life’s various disciplines, have a single common characteristic.  Notice I said a “single common characteristic” and not that greatness only requires a single characteristic.  Let’s face it, the great ones all have numerous characteristics that make them great.  Things like self-discipline, belief, vision, humor, intelligence, versatility, and curiosity just to name a few.  I could go on and on, but…

Let’s get back to the single common characteristic that is critical regardless of how many of the other characteristics are in place.  Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best:  “A great man is always willing to be little.”

His point, in my opinion, is the single, trump card to greatness is humility.  Without humility, the great are at risk of being too big.  True greatness is not born of one’s perception of self but of that of others.  A big ego blows any lasting chance of the perception of others putting you are anybody else in the Hall of Fame of Greatness.

Be little and you will be great!
