Mapping It Leads You to Creating It

b2ap3_thumbnail_001-Attitude-800x600Being stuck in limbo and not being able to get started on some project or goal can be frustrating to say the least.  Many times overcoming your inertia can be as simple as better defining what it is you want and how to get it…But, there’s the trick…how to do both of those things.

Enter the concept of mind mapping.  Rather than thinking in overwhelming and broad terms start by focusing on a single concept.  If you mind map manually, do it this way.  Draw a circle in the middle of a blank piece of paper and write a single concept in the circle.  Example:  Get a job.  Then, comes the really fun part.

Free your mind up.  Regardless of the quality of an idea or thought that comes to mind, draw a short line out from the center circle and write the idea in another circle at the end of the line.  Keep drawing lines and circles off of related concepts and before you know it you will have ideas you never dreamed you could conjure up.

Study the ideas to categorize them.  Put them in two columns with the following headings:  What it is you want to do be or have?  And, How can I do those things?  When you finish this categorization you should have multiple but clear ideas in the two columns.  Rewrite the concepts in the first column so you have a clear and concise definition of what it is you want to accomplish.  Then, act on each one of the “how tos” in the other column that seem to make sense in helping you achieve your objective you now have defined.

Voila!  You have taken yourself from a state of inertia to one of active creation.

There are numerous ways to do mind mapping.  Here’s a link to give you additional ideas and examples.
