Great song by the legendary Aretha Franklin.  She says a lot in the lyrical phrases of that song.  One phrase is particularly relevant to my point in this post, however.  That phrase is:  “Find out what it means to me.”  Have you thought about what the idea of respect means to you?  It’s important you find out what it means to you because without that understanding you can’t give it or receive it because you don’t know what “it” is.

Take a dictionary definition of the word for starters.  Here’s a couple just to get you thinking.  “A feeling of admiration for someone because of their qualities or achievements.”  And another one, “consideration for the feelings or rights of other people.”

Thinking about those two definitions what do you think you could expect if you lived by those definitions of respect?  Wouldn’t life be a whole lot easier and less confrontational?  Wouldn’t there be a lot less stress to live with?  Wouldn’t the governments of the world function a whole lot more effectively?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T seems like a good word to understand very clearly and act on consistently.  I hope you truly respect that fact.
