Say What?

Communicating effectively is a wonderful thing! By that I mean all forms of communication from talking to ourselves; talking to others; and communicating through the written word.

Yes, I know! I just wrote “talking to ourselves.” The fact is we all do it and it’s just as important to communcate well with yourself as it is to communicate well with others. After all, if you don’t understand what you are saying to yourself, how can you expect others to understand you. In short, good communication skills begins with our “self talk” and grows from there.

The essence of establishing a good foundation of communication knowledge and skills is to recognize it is what you say but it is also how you say it. Broaden your understanding of the words in your chosen language and become adept at using them effectively. People perceive a great deal about you through what you say and how you say it.

Mark Twain said it most succinctly…”The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug.” To that thought I like to add…and the difference between how you say it and how it is received can be the difference between day and night. Day, in this case, representing clear and well received communications. Night representing a total breakdown of understanding by the other person or, worse yet, a defensive, negative reaction which totally shuts down a positive interaction.

Whether it is the written word or the spoken word, the purpose of communicating is to convey something to another person or persons. A short version of the definition of convey is: “transport or transmit.”

The foundation to the quality of our lives is driven by our ability to “transport or transmit” our thoughts, ideas, opinions, dreams, etc., to ourselves and others. Given that’s the case, doesn’t it make sense for you to build deep knowledge and skills in saying what you mean empathetically rather than having people look at you with a quizzical expression and ask: “Say what?”
