Shoulder It

b2ap3_thumbnail_MP900321192Don’t ask me why!  I couldn’t give you a definitive answer as to why I love considering the meaning of words and the impact on living a purposeful life.  Call it a genetic flaw or gift!

That said, I was reading something recently and I got to thinking about the word, shoulder.  I know!  Weird!  But, work with me, here!

Anyway, I took a look at the relevant definitions of the word, shoulder, related to the point of this blog post.  Those definitions were:

  •  Put something heavy over your shoulder or shoulders to carry.
  • Take on a responsibility.
  • Push aside with your shoulder.

There’s a lot said in those various definitions about what it takes to live a purposeful and quality life.  When you think about it, I’m sure more than once in your life you have felt like you “put something heavy over your shoulder or shoulders to carry.”  Life can feel that way for sure.  Additionally, there’s the inevitable fact that each of us must “take on a responsibility” for the outcomes of our life ventures.  Finally, sometimes you have to “push aside with your shoulder” things that may be a hindrance to making progress toward your goals in life.

The ultimate point is as stated in a Jewish Proverb.  “I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders.”  Yes, a life well lived requires an attitude that, whatever it takes, you will shoulder it.
