Success Is Forward…Not Backward

One of my favorite areas of concentration in my professional speaking business is the whole topic of success and how to achieve it. I don’t know why–its been with me for as long as I can remember–but I have a passion for learning about success and its related topics. In fact one of my favorite keynote and seminar presentations is entitled: Success Is No Surprise.

I tell you all this not to promote my business but to give you a little background on why you might want to take seriously the thoughts on success I’m about to express. Forgive me…but given the above focus, I consider myself an expert on the whole topic of success. My first book is even focused on the topic.

So, let’s answer the question that may be on your mind concerning the title of this article. Why is success forward and not backward? Well, let me start with the following quote to put things in perspective.

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsenses.”–Ralph Waldo Emerson

In that quote, is the essence of why achieving success has to be a forward focus. True achievers follow the following truism: “The past is valuable as a guidepost but dangerous if used as a hitching post.” You can’t dwell on the past in such a way that it holds you back. You briefly check back to it on occasion to see what things you have done in your past that have worked for you in achieving success then. CAUTION: You don’t allow your failures to become your focus.

We cannot change the past, PERIOD! It’s gone! Let it go!

Success is always at hand when you look to the future and believe. Believe that you are therefore you can be…anything that you want…achieve anything that you want. But, again, that would be because success is about looking forward not backward.
