The Huge Difference between Happiness and Joy

b2ap3_thumbnail_j0262238Make no mistake about it!  Whether you’re happy or joyful, it would seem to be a good thing.  So, what’s the big deal, you ask?  Well, let’s take a look and see so you can learn something about enjoying both states of mind.

First, being happy or in a state of happiness.  Many of us live such miserable lives we never feel like being happy.  I hope that is not the situation for you but regardless a better understanding of what it means to be happy can be helpful to you. When you are happy you feel pleasure as it relates to your life situation.  Whatever the situation is you are pleased or glad.  Similarly, happiness is nothing more than an extension of the state of being happy.

However, joy brings a whole different level to this discussion.  One formal definition of joy is:  “The emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.”  In other words when you are filled with joy it usually is the result of success in doing, finding, or getting something.

See the difference between happy and joy?  One is a feeling of pleasure and the other is the result of something you have achieved.  Happy, therefore, is a chosen state of mind.  Joy is an outcome state of mind.

Obviously, both conditions are desirable.  However, it seems to me you can be happy without feeling joy but, conversely you can’t feel joy without also feeling happy.  So, my advice to you is to be happy with whatever your current situation is because life is too short to feel otherwise.  Yet, work hard to achieve its higher form of joy because that would seem to be the ultimate form of self-actualization.
