The Lighthouse

b2ap3_thumbnail_MP900422660Ever seen a real one? For me they are always imposing and intriguing. Imposing because of their starkness against the sea. Intriguing because of all the stories they could tell about those who have lived within them and those saved from disaster by them. The lighthouse…a bastion against the stormy sea and a source of direction to avoid disaster.

Similarly, when I think about it, life is imposing and intriguing. Imposing because of all the risk that it carries if you’re going to attempt to live it full and long. Intriguing, on the other hand, because of all its mysteries and opportunities. Wouldn’t it be great if you could find something like a lighthouse to help you deal with the risk, clear away some of the mysteries and help you take advantage of the opportunities?

You have such a lighthouse. It is your passion and creativity. If you want to minimize risk, answer mysteries and maximize opportunities, it requires passionate application of your greatest creativity. It also requires you to not follow the herd, so to speak. The poet, Charles Simic, reinforces this point very well. “Inside my empty bottle I was constructing a lighthouse while all the others were making ships.”

You’ve got to be willing to reach out for the unknown on your own and make it your own. Your unique creativity is guided through the stormy seas of life by the lighthouse of your passion.
