The Lone March

You’ve been told it or said it a thousand times.  “Oh, he or she marches to a different drummer!”  The phrase is so pervasive it has become a truism.  We instantly know what it means.  Clearly a person about whom that sentence is stated is a person that’s so different they’re alone in the crowd, so to speak.

That fact is neither bad nor good.  It depends!

Here’s where I’m going with all this, though.  If you want to be a great leader it isn’t about marching to a different drummer.  It’s about marching so that you gather others to join the march of a common drummer.  A great leader understands that marches with great and good purpose attract good marchers of great purpose.

A drum major without others in the marching band begins to look major dumb, if you’ll pardon the play on words.  The march of a lone person isn’t really a march…it’s a walk!  It can be awfully lonely!
