Three Keys

When it comes to your success there are really only three keys to maximizing your potential. The first is your level of motivation to succeed. Whatever your pursuit…your goal, if you have a huge emotional drive propelling you, then you will achieve the objective of the pursuit.

I want you to think about your motivation level and its relationship to goal-setting by using an old truism. You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.” True. However, someone added an extension to that thought…” but you sure as heck can make it thirsty!” Clearly defined, written goals for which you have a compelling reason to achieve them make you thirsty. They make you taste the full flavor of your opportunities in life.

The next critical key to success is the level of knowledge that you bring to the table, so to speak. There is no denying the old adage that knowledge is power. With that in mind, I want to share with you the knowledge of my formula for success and then build on the elements of that formula. The formula is: You – Fear = Greater Success©.

As human beings we all avoid what we fear. We fear the unknown. Therefore, we avoid the unknown. I don’t know who first expressed those thoughts but I do know they are as accurate and relevant today as when first spoken.

What is stupid about our fear of the unknown is, by definition, we don’t even know what we fear! We say things like, “Oh. I’m afraid to try. I just know I won’t be able to do it! How do we know that? Do we have some kind of Harry Potter level of wizardry that tells us that in advance of the actual experience? What a terrible spell to be under. The anecdote to that spell is this: Your level of knowledge. The less you know the more you fear. Conversely, the more you know the less you fear.

If the first two keys, your motivation and knowledge, are critical to your greater success the third one is a total derailleur if it doesn’t exist between you and the people with whom you must interact in order to achieve your objectives. That key is TRUST.

Having credible knowledge will definitely help to build trust with your fellow human beings. On the other hand, the difficulty with building trust is…it’s not easy! I mean…think about it. Can we just say, “Trust me” and people immediately drop their barriers? Heck we have a pill for everything else. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a pill for trust? “Here swallow this and trust me!” Doesn’t work like that, does it?

This brings us full circle to the first key…your motivation. People have to clearly see that your motivation in interacting with them is sincere. The slightest hint on your part at being totally self serving in your interaction with other people will deter them from working with you in the most productive way. They must sense the interaction is collaborative and working to the benefit of both sides.

There you have it…the three keys to your greater success. They are: your level of motivation; your knowledge; and your ability to build trust. It’s like a noted athletic coach once said: “The will to succeed is important, but what’s even more important is the will to prepare.” Prepare yourself using those three keys and you unlock the door to your greater success.
