Two Things Absolutely Will Make You an Awesome Leader

What do you think about when considering the important characteristics of an awesome leader?

Do you think of certain people who exhibit critical leadership characteristics?  Or—Do you actually start listing in your mind the important characteristics?

Well, whether you work from a visual image or a detailed list of characteristics, you know an awesome leader when you see one!

Your challenge in life is to make sure you are included in whatever approach another person takes when thinking about the characteristics of a leader.

You might be discounting that challenge in your mind because you don’t see yourself in a leadership position either now or in the future.

Here’s my additional challenge to you, if that is the case—Even if you aren’t leading other people, you still have to be awesome at leading yourself if you are to become all you can be, do or have.

When only leading yourself through your life the characteristics you need to exhibit and practice are the same as when leading other people.

You’re probably more than aware of the typical list of leadership characteristics.  Things like:

  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Trusting Other People
  • Good Communicator
  • Confident in the Vision and the Future
  • Commitment to People and Purpose
  • Positive Orientation in Attitude
  • Creative
  • Intuitive
  • Inspirational
  • Treat People as Individuals

All great characteristics to be an awesome leader, don’t you think?

And—they apply to you in your leadership of yourself toward achieving your dreams and goals!

All of that said, however, the two most critical characteristics are at best only implied in the above list.  Those two characteristics are most clearly stated by Henri Bergson.

Who is Henri Bergson, you ask?   :<)

Well, he is one of the more noted of French philosophers.  He was a leading thinker in the world of philosophy from the late 19th century and well into the 20th.

His influence was so broad that many of his quotes are listed on such sites as Goodreads and brainyquote.com.

One of his thoughts that is deeply relevant in this article on leadership is:

Think like a man of action, act like a man of thought.

The point is you can demonstrate all the 10 characteristics I’ve listed previously but if you don’t think about them and then act on them consistently, they are worthless.

Furthermore, when you do take action on anything, including those 10 characteristics, you do so having fully thought through the consequences of your actions.

Last week I wrote a post that gives you the “how to” for becoming action oriented in a thoughtful way.  It provides you 5 critical steps you must take.

Also, for your consideration here is one recent opinion of current examples of leaders who actually live by Bergson’s thought.
