You…A Leader?

b2ap3_thumbnail_j0387733I know!  It’s a shocking question!

Let’s face it, most people, including many of those who think they’re leaders, really aren’t.  They are leaders only in title.  The people they lead aren’t really being led.  They are being duped or coerced into doing whatever it is they’re supposed to do.  They are not inspired.  Truth be known they’re tired. And, their malaise, in my opinion, is the direct responsibility of their leader.

So, let’s get to it.  Let’s convert the question in the title of this post into the fact that you are a leader!  If you’re in doubt of your leadership skills, here are some things you must be or do for you to be a great leader.

  • You need a good head and a good heart.
  • Your head is the tool you use to create a vision that inspires people to follow you toward it.
  • Your heart goes out to your people so they can feel embraced by you and included in the vision.
  • You constantly learn new concepts and ways to accomplish your vision.
  • You adjust the vision accordingly and inspire people to stay focused on it.
  • Your people always and very clearly know where you stand on relevant issues and, most importantly, on each of   them as people.
  • Your people feel a frequent sense of reward for their efforts and a resulting rise in self-worth.
  • When your people need help to improve their efforts, they clearly know you’re with each of them as a person but expecting them to change their actions, as appropriate.
  • You have a sense of humor and use it to relieve the tension of the pursuit of the vision and to make the trip fun.
  • All of the above characteristics make you a collaborator and celebrator…not a dictator!

…Ten points that make YOU a leader.
